Public relations: necessity and process

By admin June 12th, 2011

With the current trend in regards to advertising and their costs, public relations has been a popular alternative to traditional marketing as it involves gaining the same reputation without the excessive expenditures. This is especially useful in times when an organization wishes to take up a certain proposal and get the opinion of the general public about such proposal. Public relations is a practice required to build mutual understanding between one party and the public.

In terms of educating the public, the same method is just as effective. For instance, public relations is a good option in implementing or educating the people about cleantech. As alternative energy has been a popular topic when it comes to concerns about the environment, implementing cleantech PR ensures that people are aware of the benefits and consequences of the said technology. Constant green public relations campaigns ensure that everyone will be ready to adopt the new system and is aware of the said alternatives.

Public relations can be easily implemented with the help of a PR professional. The benefits of hiring a PR professional versus doing your own public relations campaigns are numerous. Public relations is not rocket science, with the right knowledge and research, anyone can do it. The question would be – does that person or that organization have enough time to do so? PR professionals are paid to do what they do and they are more experienced in this type of job so it is more recommended to leave it to them rather than running the risk of spending time and money for something  that will give you little to no benefits.

For a PR professional, the public relations process involves a four step process: the first one involves gathering data about the organization and figuring out the challenges about implementing public relations. The second one involves putting this data into analysis and figuring out which PR tactics are best to take for maximum output. The third step involves planning – extensive planning makes sure that problems are minimal. The fourth step involves implementation and evaluation – implementing the plan that’s been formulated during the first three steps and evaluating whether the implementation has been a success and how effective the whole process has been.

The implementation of public relations takes several months and a similar amount of time may be required before the long term effects can be felt. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile process that has to be looked into by any organization that needs a good boost in reputation.
